Blog Platforms: What Do The Professionals Use?

Not that I am saying that the top 100 bloggers in Technorati are professionals, but you get the idea. There are some real dominators in this space and it was interesting of Brian Solis to put together this list. Take a look and see where your own application is being used by some of the top bloggers in the world. I would have liked to have seen this list 5 years ago. Moveable Type was the dominant force then, and WordPress splashed on the scene with Matt Mullenweg and the crew. I would also like to see where we are a few more years from now.

I myself started out using Moveable Type. I was wanting to make sure I was using the best of the best available, and when I finally completed my research, they seemed to be the best. The reason for my change? It is very simple. I was overrun by spammers. I had a few problems with their “Black List” spam filter and I was inundated by spammers and porn sites and all the rest and I heard about this new blogging platform that made that better. I never looked back after that and I wonder what the UI is like for that platform now that I have been away for a while.I might just set up a MT blog and check it out. My problem is I am addicted to using a blog editors now. I love Windows Live Writer and get along with ecto because they have yet to show me any other options for my Mac Book Pro. In fact I have said that if I had a developer with some skills I could make an editor that we professional bloggers and the serious blog enthusiast would love to use.

If you want to save money on your taxes, do you find out what brand of pencil most CPAs buy, and use that brand?

If you want to sing like Bono, do you buy the same brand of toothpaste he uses?

If you want to cook like Emiril Lagasse, do you buy the same brand of spoons that he stirs with?

If you want to be as attractive to women as George Clooney, do you buy the same brand of shoelaces that he uses?

This is a really silly poll.

Having something to say? That matters.
Having the ability to say it well? That matters.
Capturing the interest of many readers? That matters.
Software only matters when it fails.

The best software is that which gets out of your way. If someone notices the software, it’s because there’s a deficiency – it’s not doing its job. But there are plenty of good platforms. I use Drupal, which is an industrial-strength CMS. I love the many options it gives me – but many bloggers are happy with lightweight software that’s easier to configure.

Of course, you are right Harl as far as a poll. I guess what my point was trying to get across is that blogging platforms have changed in my eyes from when I started. I see there is only one Drupal user in the group. Heather Armstrong is using it for the popular blog, Dooce. I found it surprising that she would be using it. Is your blog in need of an industrial strength CMS or is that what you landed on when throwing the dart? I guess i was curious who was using what as i just came from a Wordcamp conference in Vegas and there is a big contingent of WordPress users. As an irony, I can remember a Wordcamp in Austin a while back and they (Drupal) was presenting on the other side of the bar.

Actually, you missed an up and coming platform – Compendium Blogware. It’s unlike any of the open source platforms since it’s built for the Enterprise, SaaS, has security, monitoring, disaster recovery, backups and uses cloud bursting in the event that a client gets an onslaught of traffic. We also supply coaching and analysis for our clients to ensure that the blog has a positive return on investment.

Hi Doug,

I’m always curious and fascinated by new platforms and how they make things better. Would loveto take a look at your software. As a professional blogger and as a person that hires bloggers for companies on a regular basis, we are always looking for tools to make out job easier. A positive ROI for a blogger is always what clients look for as well as the blogger. Let me have a look under the hood.

I was just introduced to another platform called Habari. I will be checking it out in the near future as well.
