Hiring A Blogger As "Chief Conversation Officer"

2009 January 7

I was reading through my feeds and ran across a piece by John Jantsch at Duct Tape Marketing on companies needing to hire Chief Conversation Officers. Jantsch says:

“This year’s next position for many small business should be a conversation officer – someone in charge of the story.

That officer could be employed to create, curate and sometimes manipulate the conversations that must be coming from your company.”

This is exactly what I have in mind when I talk to companies that are looking to hire a blogger. A blogger has to have all of the tools and traits John mention in the post there. Thanks John for discussing this issue. i am a proponent of this position for all companies just as you are stating that this is a position that companies should look to fill as we head into the new year and beyond. I agree this is soon becoming a must have in your organizational chart.

Do you think that companies will be as open to hiring someone for this reason now with the economy still down? Since many companies are trimming their excess, I feel like the last thing they’d want to do is hire someone to blog for them — it seems expendable.

On the contrary Lauren, the freelance blogger right now is a much cheaper option if they decide to go that route. They aren’t having to pay the benefits and normal costs associated.

The only problem with that scenario is that you don’t have the same “under the umbrella” investment so it could be seen that the blogger or CCO is not as passionate as they need to be.

They are a valuable asset in this economy as they talk not only to the customer and the public, but in some cases the employees themselves are getting valuable information in conversations started and carried on by the CCO.

I will agree with you that the position is not on the radar of a lot of CEO’s or C level people. Right now they are saving their own jobs and trying to figure out ways to save the company. But what a great asset to have someone that can keep everyone apprised of the happenings.

Tara,

I work for a pet food company and am looking for a blogger to promote our holistic pet food line. Your background as a holistic nutritionist caught my eye. Although I’m not a grammar gyru, I was a bit caught off guard that you had misspellings on your blog.
