Just a note announcing the first issue of Professional Blogging News is available. This issue contains an interview with Jim on the subject of blogger pay, along with talks with Daniel at DailyBlogTips and Andrew Keen, author of the controversial The Cult of the Amateur: How The Internet is Killing Our Culture.

I would like to pay bloggers more.

But, what CAN be paid is determined by the market and future profitability.
It's not the bloggers fault. It's the market that's still maturing and growing.

Hi Easton,

Good article with a worthy point. Coming from the traditional print and journalism side, it is a long-held tenant that professional writers do not work for peanuts -- doing so only drives down the entire market. It is good to hear that message is making its way into the blog space.

It is not enough to call yourself a professional blogger and point to that tag as a sign of professional blogging. Pay is another factor. Until blog publishers pay professional rates and blog writers turn down sweatshop rates, the business will remain a novelty. Just my two cents.

(By the way, in July, I'll be opening a website created to discuss these nagging, but often overlooked issues.)

Hi Jim. It's great to see these kinds of articles. By the way, after you left a few comments on Performancing, I emailed you (early last week, I think), but haven't had a response. Just wondering if my email got caught in your spam filter. My gmail account IS having that problem. I hope you get in touch with me as I'd like to apologize about something.

Nice post, Jim. On a larger level, this thinking applies as well. Blog networks, blog consulting folks and other people or businesses who have acquired a high level of knowledge concerning blogging need to realize how valuable that knowledge really is! ... And how fast they need to act because they're likely only a few months ahead of the curve.
